This piece is deeply personal to me, as it honors my grandmother, who passed away from dementia. Throughout my life, I witnessed her gradual decline, and I never got the chance to fully connect with her in the ways I’d hoped. I never learned Japanese or finished learning piano from her. As she reverted, I could still hear her speak in Japanese and saw how she made various associations. Though we never had those intellectual, deep conversations, I felt a deeper connection to her — one where words weren’t needed. She knew I loved her, and I knew she loved me. That mutual energy was always present.

"Blue Oma" is an exploration of the world my grandmother may have experienced through the lens of her disintegrating brain. Created two years after her passing, this piece has brought me some closure, allowing me to honor her experience and process the grief of losing a loved one to this disease. My hope is that it may also offer others a way to reflect on and navigate their own journeys of grief.
